CSUN Professor Celebrates Book Publication

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 17, 2007) — Cal State Northridge officials invite the public to a special program celebrating the publication of a new book written by Jewish Studies Program Coordinator Jody Myers on Monday, Nov. 5.

Myers’ book "Kabbalah and the Spiritual Quest: The Kabbalah Centre in America," is the first comprehensive study of the popularization of Jewish Kabbalah in America. A discussion and book signing will be held in the Whitsett Room, Sierra Hall 451 from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

"The book discussion gives the public the opportunity to hear objective research about a significant phenomenon, the popularization of Jewish Kabbalah, which has historically been rather esoteric, and the controversial new religious group of Jewish Kabbalah, the Kabbalah Centre," said Myers.

The event will feature Rabbi Ed Feinstein of Valley Beth Shalom, who will talk about several issues raised in Myers’ book, including how esoteric literature became widely available in English translation in bookstores, on the Web, in classes and of interest to pop celebrities. Myers will provide insight into her book by responding to questions and points made by Feinstein.
