CSUN Faculty Invite Public to Join Them in LA Marathon Completion Challenge

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 2, 2007) — How many people dream of completing a four-hour, five-kilometer marathon? With the help of Cal State Northridge’s LA Marathon Completion Challenge, that dream can become reality.

The challenge includes an extensive preparation course that provides proper conditioning for the Los Angeles Marathon scheduled for Sunday, March 2, 2008. The CSUN challenge is open to everyone who can complete the prep program, which progressively requires them to be able to jog continuously for 30 minutes in the week prior to Nov. 12.

"Exercising is a challenge for many people," said Steven Loy, professor of kinesiology and coordinator of the project. "I’m offering an opportunity to set a goal that requires regular exercise by beginning a program that has structure, camaraderie and a realistic probability for success."

The program is based on The Non-Runner"s Marathon Trainer, written by David A. Whitsett, Forrest A. Dolgener and Tanjala Jo Kole. Loy encouraged participants to buy the book because it explains the physiology and psychology that a future runner will experience during training.

"Stretching oneself can lead to significant growth and we’re here to help in the process," said Loy. "The overarching objective is to have people adopt a healthier lifestyle with physical activity being a significant component."

Each runner will need his or her own support member. A support member will accompany the runner by bicycle or by car to provide water and nourishment.

Loy asked each participant to recruit family and friends.

"The more diverse participants we have, the easier it will be for you to stay with a program that will change your life," Loy said.

Those interested in participating or who would like more information can e-mail Steven Loy at steven.loy@csun.edu.
