CSUN Expo to Provide Tools to Deal with Disaster

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 5, 2007) — A disaster can strike at any time, any place and in any form. Being prepared is key to survival.

Officials with Cal State Northridge’s Department of Public Safety and the university’s Community Emergency Response Team are hosting a "Disaster Readiness Expo" on Tuesday, Oct. 9, to help local community and business members get the information and tools they need to deal with and survive a disaster.

The free expo is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot south of CSUN’s Department of Public Safety Building at the corner of Darby Avenue and Prairie Street.

"It has been terrific to see all facets of the community who support or are a part of emergency preparedness come together in organizing this event," said CSUN police chief Anne P. Glavin. "Our CERT team is top notch and we are fortunate to have such enthusiastic interest. This event will be a golden opportunity to learn more about being prepared for a disaster or to stock up on supplies and we hope everyone finds time to visit the expo."

A variety of exhibitors—from the American Red Cross, the National Weather Service, the Southern California Earthquake Center and Southern California Gas Company, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and the city’s Emergency Preparedness Department to emergency equipment providers and local retailers—will be on hand to answer questions about disaster preparedness or selling the tools needed to deal with an emergency situation.

The expo will include a "Kids Clinic" hosted by Home Depot that will include lessons on conservation and visits from Sparky the Fire Dog and Smokey Bear.
