CSUN Students Come in Third at National Operations Management Competition

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 21, 2007) — A team of Cal State Northridge systems and operations management students placed third in the second annual American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) competition.

Dewey Nguyen, Thomas Adam and Hovik Ginosyan represented CSUN as one of six teams showcasing their skills at the national APICS final in Denver. The competition tested the teams on their ability to create comprehensive solutions to a variety of real-life situations found in the workplace, including business operations, productivity and scheduling.

"This was our first year competing," said Richard Gunther, chair of the Department of Systems and Operations Management. "CSUN took third because we have a great program with great students who were well prepared."

First place went to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and second place to Rochester Institute of Technology. Other schools that competed include Wichita State University, Bowling Green State University and University of Toledo.

Consisting of more than 40,000 members, APICS, the Association for Operations Management, is the global leader and premier source of the body of knowledge in operations management, including production, inventory, supply chain, materials management, purchasing, and logistics. Two thousand of those members traveled to Denver to take part in this year’s competition.

California State University, Northridge has more than 35,200 full- and part-time students and offers 62 bachelor’s and 50 master’s degrees as well as 28 teaching credential programs.
