Former Whitewater Counsel Kenneth Starr to Speak at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 27, 2006) -- Former independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr, now dean of the Pepperdine University School of Law, will discuss integrity, ethics and the law during a speech at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, Oct. 18.

Starr’s presentation is free and open to the public. It is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m. in the Shoshone Room of CSUN’s Satellite Student Union near the northeast corner of the campus at Zelzah Avenue and Lassen Street.

"Although some of his noted moments as a public figure are somewhat controversial, Kenneth Starr is undoubtedly a respected voice regarding the maintenance of integrity and ethics in the legal profession,’ said business law senior Christopher Bay, president of the student-led Business Law Association, which is sponsoring the event. ’I hope that attendees of this event will walk away with a better understanding of the fiduciary mindset that is critical to good lawyering.’

A Duke Law School graduate, Starr served as a federal judge on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals from 1983-1989 and as U.S. Solicitor General from 1989 to 1993. In 1994, Starr was appointed by a three-judge panel to take over the investigation of the Whitewater land transaction connected with President Bill Clinton. He later received expanded authority to investigate claims of possible perjury and obstruction of justice involving Clinton’s relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. His investigation later led to impeachment proceedings against Clinton.

For more information about Starr’s appearance, call Cal State Northridge’s Department of Business Law at (818) 677-2905.

The Department of Business Law’s mission is to enable students to recognize and analyze legal issues arising in the business environment. Classes are taught using the Socratic and problem methods with a goal of participatory learning and the development of reasoning skills.
