Cal State Northridge Among Top Universities for Jewish Students

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 14, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge is 18th in a national ranking of the top public universities chosen by Jewish students, according to Reform Judaism magazine.

The magazine’s fall 2006 issue features its first "Insider’s Guide to College," which includes the top 30 private and top 30 public institutions of higher education in North America chosen by Jewish students.

"We are honored to be the destination of choice for so many diverse students," CSUN President Jolene Koester said. "Cal State Northridge’s faculty and staff pride ourselves in our efforts to reach out to all students and provide them with a rich, quality education that reflects the wealth of diversity in our region."

The guide, published by Reform Judaism in partnership with the Union for Reform Judaism’s KESHER College Department and Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, was created for high school and college students. Its centerfold lists colleges by Jewish population—the top 30 private and top 30 public North American schools Jews choose.

The list of private schools, led by New York University (No. 1), Boston University (No. 2) and the University of Pennsylvania (No. 3), did not include any from California.

The list of public schools, led by the University of Florida (No. 1), the University of Maryland (No. 2) and Rutgers University (No. 3), included five California institutions. Cal State Northridge ranked highest at 18th place, followed by the University of California, Santa Cruz, at 24, San Diego State University at 26, University of California, Los Angeles, at 27 and the University of California, Davis, at 28.

California State University, Northridge has 33,000 full- and part-time students and offers 62 bachelor’s and 50 master’s degrees as well as 28 teaching credential programs. Founded in 1958, CSUN is among the largest single-campus universities in the nation and the only four-year public university in the San Fernando Valley. The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural heart of the Valley and beyond.
