CSUN Students Awarded Scholarships to Study in China

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 19, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge senior Daniel Galimberti and graduate student Kimberly Moultrie have been awarded full scholarships from the Chinese Government Scholarship Council to study in that country during the 2006-2007 academic year.

The two left earlier this month, with Galimberti, an accounting major, headed to Shanghai University of Business and Economics and Moultrie, a graduate student in nutrition, off to Tianjin Foreign Studies University in northern China.

"Both students are very grateful to have this opportunity to learn more about China and hope that it will open many doors for them to pursue their goals in life, personally and professionally," said Justine Zhixin Su, director of CSUN’s China Institute.

This is the eighth year in a row that Cal State Northridge students, for a total of 12, have been awarded scholarships by the Chinese Government Scholarship Council. The Chinese Counsel General in Los Angeles recommended Northridge for the awards over other Southern California institutions of higher education because of its strong ties and collaborative relationships with institutions in China, Su said.

She noted that in the past 20 years, the institute has facilitated the establishment of collaborative relationships with more than 40 Chinese institutions of higher education and government agencies. Northridge has played host to more than 200 Chinese scholars and young leaders in the last 10 years.

Su said the Chinese government scholarship program has been so successful that several past CSUN scholars are still studying and working in China.

Galimberti, of Canoga Park, intends to spend his first semester at Shanghai University of Business and Economics taking "English-speaking friendly" classes with an emphasis on international business and accounting as well as classes in Chinese language and cultural studies. His second semester will focus on China»s accounting and business systems.

Moultrie, of Northridge, will spend much of her time at Tianjin Foreign Studies University trying to increase her proficiency in the Chinese language and culture. She hopes to use her increased knowledge of the language to gain a better understanding of China’s health care systems, including the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine.

Su said both students are considering the possibility of living and working in China once their studies are done.

Cal State Northridge established the China Institute in 1982. The institute aims to promote better understanding of the Chinese culture and to strengthen friendship between the American and Chinese people. In more than 20 years is has played host to hundreds of Chinese scholars and has been influential in arranging dozens of education and cultural exchange programs between China and the United States. For more information about the institute, visit its Web site at www.csunchinainstitute.org.

California State University, Northridge has 33,000 full- and part-time students and offers 62 bachelor’s and 50 master’s degrees as well as 28 teaching credential programs.
