(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Oct. 10, 2006) -- In an effort to further enhance traffic safety on and around Cal State Northridge’s campus, the university’s police department will be joining the California Highway Patrol in conducting a sobriety checkpoint the evening of Friday, Oct. 13.
University police officers in marked police vehicles will be assisting the C.H.P. at a major intersection near the university between the hours of 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.
"We have been working with the West Valley Area C.H.P. for several years now with sobriety checkpoints," said Northridge Police Chief Anne P. Glavin. "Since members of both departments share the goal of removing intoxicated motorists from our streets and neighborhoods, these kind of operations are necessary and effective. The cooperative spirit demonstrated by the officers of both agencies greatly facilitates the overall effort."
Drivers approaching the checkpoint will encounter informational signs indicating that the checkpoint is ahead. After being diverted into a designated lane of traffic, motorists will be detained momentarily while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.
California State University, Northridge has 34,000 full- and part-time students and offers 62 bachelor’s and 50 master’s degrees as well as 28 teaching credential programs.
