Cal State System Offers Admission to
Hurricane Katrina-Impacted Students
Admitting Students in Need
In an effort to assist college
and university students displaced by Hurricane Katrina, California State University campuses this fall are
offering to admit students from Gulf Coast area universities, and
California students who had planned to attend universities in that
region.
To assist these students, the California State University system has taken the following
actions:
Students from the Gulf areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama--even
those who lack proper academic documents--may be admitted conditionally
for fall 2005. Such students' enrollment status for subsequent terms will depend
on the as-yet unknown ability of schools, colleges and universities
in the Gulf region to provide transcripts and other documentation.
Hurricane Katrina-impacted students interested in
attending a Cal State campus for the fall 2005 semester may call the Cal State Northridge Office of the Vice President
for Student Affairs at (818) 677-2391, or e-mail Robin Ferguson at robin.ferguson@csun.edu.
Policy Waivers/Suspensions The Cal State system has temporarily suspended the policy requiring
documented completion of A-G course requirements for first-time
freshmen and transfer students; and waived the normal English and
mathematics placement test (EPT/ELM) requirements for students impacted
by Hurricane Katrina.
Admission Priority
Admission priority for Hurricane Katrina-affected students is in the following
order:
- California residents who had previously planned to attend institutions
in the Gulf regions of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
- Students from the hurricane-affected areas previously offered CSU
admission for fall 2005.
- Former CSU students enrolled or planning to enroll for fall 2005 at a
Hurricane Katrina-affected college or university.
- Students who can document fall 2005 admission to, or recent attendance
at, any regionally accredited college in the areas impacted by Hurricane
Katrina.
Student Fees
Students who are residents of the Katrina-affected areas of Louisiana,
Mississippi or Alabama will be exempt from payment of non-resident
(out-of-state) student fees. Such students still will be responsible
for the regular California-resident State University Fee, all local
campus fees, housing fees for those living on campus, and other fees
required of enrolled students. However, CSU campuses will provide flexible deferred payment plans and account
receivables, as appropriate.
Financial Aid
The California State University system is
exploring the possibility of special conditions on the federal
financial aid regulations for students unable to attend institutions in
the Gulf States. In the meantime, CSU
campuses will establish account receivables for financial aid recipient
students whose financial aid disbursements may not be made until
official admission.
