Covering Greatness: The Life and Death of Nelson Mandela

Three journalists will visit California State University, Northridge on Wednesday to discuss the life and death of Nelson Mandela for the “Covering Greatness” event. The three participants all covered Nelson Mandela during his lifetime. Participants include Ann Simmons, Darlene Donloe and Bob Butler.

Simmons is a video journalist for the Los Angeles Times, who was bureau chief for the newspaper in Nairobi and Johannesburg for five years and a reporter in the Moscow bureau of Time Magazine. Donloe is an entertainment, automotive and travel journalist whose career began as a publicist in 1990 when she was invited to serve as Mandela’s publicist during a Los Angeles visit. Butler is a reporter for KCBS Radio in San Francisco and is president of the National Association of Black Journalists. Butler traveled to South Africa to cover Mandela’s funeral.

Students are invited to the panel, which will be followed by a discussion from 4 – 6 p.m. in Oviatt 25. The event is presented by the National Association of Black Journalists and the University Student Union.
