The textbooks have been packaged together so you may purchase them for a cheaper price. You have two options here. You may either purchase the e-books at a much lower price or the traditional/physical books.

e-Book package: American Government Brief e-book: 978-0-393-91924-0 (around $26); Governing California e-book: 978-0-393-12059-2 (around $10)

Traditional book package: The ISBN for the packaged set is 978-0-393-12107-0 (around $63)

The textbooks may be purchased directly from the publisher, W.W. Norton & Company, at www.nortonebooks.com (e-books); http://books.wwnorton.com

Scantrons:

Students must also purchase 3 individual Scantron no. 882-E forms for the exams. I recommend these specific scantrons be purchased from the University bookstore since forms other than 882-E cannot be processed. In addition, Scantron forms that are torn, crumpled, or in any way defective due to mishandling, may not be processed either and thus result in zero points.

Moodle:

The course will also be using Moodle as the learning management system. During the semester students will need to access the course Moodle site at http://moodle.csun.edu in order to complete 5 exams. The dates of the exams are listed in the Exam Calendar. I recommend students to login to the Moodle course site and familiarize themselves with Moodle if never used before. There is a Student Moodle Help link located in the upper left block of the Moodle course for your reference.

Course Information

Course Description

The University Catalog describes this course as the "examination of the development and dynamics of American political institutions and political processes including a special emphasis upon the role of minority groups". In this course we will explore the structure, dynamics, and processes of our system of government both on the national and California state and local levels.

This course also satisfies your Title 5 requirement for American history and government.

Student Learning Objectives

The overall goal of this course is to provide you with an understanding of how our government works at each level (national, state and local). The specific learning objectives and criteria for assessment for the course include:

Course Requirements

Attendance:

I will randomly take role and call out a few student names. If you are not present when your name is called out, then you will loose attendance points. Each students name will be called out twice during the semester.

Exams:

There will be 8 exams in the class. Each exam will be worth 60 points. However, at the the end of the semester the exam with the lowest score will be dropped. Please see the Course Schedule below for the specific dates and mark your personal calendars in advance since exams may NOT be rescheduled. There will be no ifs, ands, or buts on this one. Instead, the course will not have a final exam. 5 out of the 8 exams will be taken on Moodle, the University's learning management system.

The syllabus was amended and one of the exams was replaced with a short assignment worth 60 points. The assignment requires students to find three CA propositions to write about.

Select 6 propositions from the recent election and write a summary of 1-2 pages for each, which includes the following:

* What is the proposition about?
* What are the pros and cons?
* Who is for it and against it?
* Who is sponsoring it?
