What is Supplemental Instruction?

New CSUN students enrolling in 115 can now choose to take Supplemental Instruction along with their Freshman Composition Class.

If you opt for a class with Supplemental Instruction (SI), you will meet with your classmates twice a week to get a chance to work through class material together.  Your SI Leader will answer questions, help you understand the readings, learn how to quote and document effectively, and give tips and support as you get comfortable with the university campus.

With SI, you will have a chance to ask questions you forget to ask the teacher, get to know your classmates, start on some of your homework, and meet an advanced student who has been there before.

So what are students saying about SI?

“I personally think SI is very helpful and beneficial to students.  SI provides that extra help that can go a long way.  SI helped me feel more confident when there were difficult assignments.” --Leslie Gomez, Class of 2021

“I think SI should be mandatory because it will help students.  I really enjoyed taking this class.” --Jocelyn Grimaldo, Class of 2021

“I am thankful to have taken an SI class because it gave me a better understanding of the main class.  Students should take those extra 50 minutes and enroll in an SI class.” --Ruth Cobieya, Class of 2021

“The SI class gave me a deeper understanding of my main writing class.  If it were not for this class I would have struggled.” --Gustavo Chavez, Class of 2021

“SI class boosted my self-esteem.” --Beatriz Lopez, Class of 2021

“The SI class allowed me to get to know my classmates very well.  This is where I created great friendships.  Overall, I think this class is needed for freshmen because it is a great way to get comfortable with college.” --Cacie Smith, Class of 2021

“My experiences in SI helped me to succeed in my writing classes because my SI leaders were patient, respectful, and caring.” --Jasmine Mosquesda-Mejia, Class of 2021

“When I first attended CSUN, I felt overwhelmed and nervous.  I was afraid to ask ‘dumb’ questions.  In SI, I learned that your SI leader is like your own personal tutor, who is with you in class for the semester.  My experience in SI has been very helpful.” --Erica Gonzales, Class of 2021

“Without SI I would not be doing as well as I am now.” --Emily Garcia, Class of 2021
