Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to explore, analyze, discuss, and
synthesize points of view on controversial gender issues. Using Hypernews
groups, students will participate in on-line discussions about vital
issues and after critical analysis of information presented, they will
determine their own particular position on the topic.
Students will engage in critical thinking by challenging assumptions and
unconscious biases.
Requirements of the Assignment
- Select one issue to discuss on Hypernews (See
possible topics below)
- Sign up for Hypernews group; no more than five participants will be
allowed in each group.
- Post at least five entries, including responses to articles,
references
(e.g.URL), observations, summaries of books, newspapers, etc. You must
post at least two entries on each side of the issue and one in which you
state your own position and why. ( Minimum: five entries) Cite sources of
your information.
- Prepare a three page typed ( double spaced) paper in which you
(1)state the issue in your own words; (2) summarize the pro and con
positions (3) state your position and justify; (4) Indicate sources of
information.
- Present, along with your Hypernews group, a 10-15 minute oral summary
of the issue.
Criteria for Evaluating Assignment
- Required number of entries
- Quality and length of entries
- Quality and thoughtfulness of written paper
- Clarity and interest of oral presentation
