Climbing |
At the conclusion of the
course students should be able to achieve the departmental key learning outcome:
Departmental Student
Learning Outcome #1:
“Students
will demonstrate critical thinking including analysis, synthesis, and evaluation
in the fields of play, leisure, recreation, parks, and/or tourism through
outdoor experiential learning methods.”
At the conclusion of the
course the students will be able to achieve the additional learning objectives:
- Have an increased
understanding of and appreciation for the natural environment and synthesize
this knowledge with individual philosophy to put minimum impact into
practice
- Develop the basic
skills and methods that promote health and safety in backcountry
environments including body regulation, hazards of the outdoor environment,
fires, stoves, basic navigation, nutrition, water purification.
- Develop the basic
skills and ethics required for safe mountaineering and rock climbing
- Demonstrate an
understanding of the equipment necessary for safety and comfort in various
climbing activities
- Analyze the relevant
factors in creating a safe and beneficial climbing trip and carry out a
successful trip on their own
- Identify development of
their own self-confidence and self-awareness in conjunction with
understanding of the needs of a group
