Chief Function(s) of Nerve:
Smell (olfaction)

The olfactory bulbs are the second order neurons of cranial nerve I.  Second-order neurons implies that these are the second neurons in the chain of olfactory neurons carrying olfactory information to the brain.  The olfactory nerves themselves were left in the animal's nasal epithilium when the brain was removed from the skull cavity.
