Welcome to the first edition of the Michael D. Eisner College of Education's monthly e-newsletter. The purpose of this new resource is to communicate internally regarding efforts in the college community, and to reflect the highlights of our colleagues. In this inaugural issue, we will focus on news and events from the Fall semester thus far, including the addition of several new MDECOE members.

Introductions

We are thrilled to welcome three new faculty members to the College of Education this Fall. Dean Spagna and Associate Dean Beverly Cabello took them out for a welcome breakfast at the beginning of the semester, and they were also honored at the Chapters' Luncheon on September 24th.

We are also glad to welcome Vanessa Villavicencio, our Graduate Student Recruitment Coordinator.

Accomplishments

  • Dean Spagna participated in the opening of LA Compact 2.0 on October 8. Read More
  • The Dean also traveled to Beijing and Shanghai with Professor Justine Su to strengthen our connections with Chinese schools. He toured educational facilities of all levels, contributed as a guest speaker, and visited with our alumni and friends in China.
  • We have built a new interactive map which shows the location of donations and dedications within our college building. See the Map
  • Stephanie Johnson (lecturer in SPED, teacher for the DEAF Project) was one of 10 individuals honored by Los Angeles City Council in conjunction with Deaf Awareness Month. Read More
  • Irene Cota (EED) has published a new book, titled Validating Parental Strategies as a Bridge to Learning (ISBN 978-1-4652-5113-8), which contains practical everyday strategies for teachers to share with parents when collaborating in educating children. Order a Copy
  • Dimpal Jain (ELPS) has a recently published book chapter titled "Women community college student leaders of color: An examination of student involvement theory" in Working with students in community college: Contemporary strategies for bridging theory, research, and practice by L.S. Kelsay & E.M. Zamani-Gallaher.
  • Dimpal Jain was also a discussant in a symposium on "Faculty voices in diverse environments" at the Annual Meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education in Washington, D.C.
  • The National Science Foundation has awarded the College of Education a $796,000 Robert Noyce grant, which seeks to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics majors and professionals to become K-12 mathematics and science teachers. Read More
  • NASA has awarded the Department of Secondary Education $135,000 in funding for the JPL-CSUN Pre-Service Science Teacher Institute, which provides training for pre-service elementary and secondary teachers in the fields of engineering and space science. Read More
  • Dr. Clara C. Park in Secondary Education has received a 5th-year continuation grant of $488,255 from the U. S. Dept. of Education for the Educating Hispanic Students for the 21st Century Project.
  • Dr. Clara C. Park also received a 3rd-year continuation grant of $400,000 from the U. S .Dept. of Education for the Preparing Asian Bilingual Teacher Education Project.
  • The U.S. Office of Special Education Programs awarded the Deaf Education program a $1.25 million grant titled "IDEP: Interdisciplinary Deaf Education Teacher Preparation Program," which will enhance the current Deaf Education program in teacher preparation by integrally involving Deaf community members, parents, interpreters and paraeducators, as well as related service professionals.   • The Deaf Studies Association presents: Audism Lecture Series, a discussion panel and lecture on October 24. Read More
  • The Cal State Northridge Writing Project presents the 2014 Write to Literacy Conference for all educators on October 25 in the University Student Union. Read More
  • Strength United held its "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, a March Against Sexual and Domestic Violence" event on October 25. Read More
  • The 2014 MDECOE Research Colloquium, featuring Dr. Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, will be held on October 29. Read More
  • Your presence is requested on October 31 for our Halloween Spooktacular. Read More
  • The Los Angeles Literacy Center presents Family Fun Day: Storytelling by the "Indoor" Campfire, Strategies for Assisting Your Child with Reading and Writing Informational Texts on November 8. Read More
  • The Family Focus Resource Center announces the second annual Special Needs Resource Fair on November 8. Read More
  • The DFST Department is hosting a speaker on November 14. Mark Zaurov will present his research on Deaf Jewish life in Germany and Eastern Europe during the 1940's and the Holocaust. Read More
  • Applications to be the College's Research Fellow for 2015-16, with an award of 12 units reassigned time and up to $1,000 in operating expenses, are being accepted up to November 15 at 5pm in the Dean's Office.
