re/connecting people with parks - 'PADDLE LEADERSHIP'

Re/Connecting People with Parks is a programme coordinated by Dr. Mechelle Best of the Department of Recreation & Tourism Management (RTM) at California State University – Northridge (CSUN).  The programme is re/connecting diverse CSUN students and community members with parks by facilitating monthly recreation and/or volunteering activities. The programme's aims are to encourage participants’ enjoyment and stewardship of, and advocacy for our natural and cultural assets while increasing the number of graduates who pursue careers with our parks and organisations that facilitate outdoor recreation experiences.

One project - Paddle Safe and Leadership - at CSUN’s Aquatic Center at Castaic Lake State Recreation Area, is being offered to a group of minority participants in the 15 – 25 age range who meet once per month from September until mid-November, 2017, and will do so again in spring 2018 from March until May. The group is learning paddling skills and getting the opportunity to practise them regularly. The group is also participating in leadership training to be better equipped to encourage their family, friends and community members to try water-based recreation activities. The Paddle Safe and Leadership project is supported by a prAna Explorer Grant and CSUN-RTM’s Center for Recreation & Tourism.
