Week of November 29, 2004

Due date: Monday, December 3, 2004 by 5:00 PM
Total points possible: 75

Please provide brief answers to all of the following questions using the assigned readings from your text book.

  1. Chapter 26 discusses revitalization movements. How do these figure into rapid cultural change in many parts of the world?
  2. In Chapter 27, your textbook talks about “standardizing the body.” What does this mean, and how might it reflect the pressures of culture change?
  3. Chapters 26 and 27 of your textbook discuss various reasons that people around the world might resist the influences of Western, industrial societies.
Is there any evidence that Third World cultures want to adopt Western-style economic and social practices?

Remember: A "brief answer" in this case generally means from one to two double spaced pages per question. Your answers will be evaluated on how well you identify key concepts, compare and contrast differing points of view, identify important historical developments and illustrate your points with good examples. The idea is not to answer the questions as quickly as possible, but rather to demonstrate what you have learned.
