Chapter 13: Sampling Techniques
Examples
- Sample Playback Demonstration [30 sec. YouTube video]—A piano patch in Logic's ESX-24 sampler. 1) a scale with all the notes at the same velocity; 2) a single note at varying velocities; and 3) the right hand part of Bach's Invention No. 1. The boxes at the top represent the velocity zones and the boxes in the middle represent all the samples assigned to a given note (here they include four different velocities and pedal samples for each velocity). This instrument is chromatically sampled because there are separate samples for each note.
- Fairlight CMI [6 min. YouTube video]—A 1980 Australian news segment that features this early (and expensive!) sampling instrument.
- Herbie Hancock and the Fairlight CMI [14 min. YouTube video]—Herbie Hancock playing the Fairlight CMI on Sesame Street, demoing it to Quincy Jones, and Rockit.
- The E-MU Emulator II [3 min. YouTube video]—vintage video of Alan Wilder of DePeche Mode demoing the Emulator, an early commercial sampling keyboard.
- Pat Metheny and the Synclavier [8 min. YouTube video]—Metheny shows how he uses the Synclavier, an early sampling and synthesis instrument.
