From last week:

  • MA portfolio comes closer to focus
  • Registering for spring classes
  • Position paper guidelines
  • Assessment - what are the issues?
  • Assessment readings - choose one or find one of your own
    • Wiki outlines and who is doing what

Previous Announcements:

Week 1.

Welcome to SED 690. There are two main goals for this course: 1) to help everyone perfect their research plan and collect data, and 2) to explore key issues in science education. To get started with this, check out the course Syllabus and the Assignment Schedule. This week is the introduction to the course and the beginning of the science concept interview assignment. We will read an article by Eleanor Duckworth this week on the developing conceptual understanding. [NOTE: there is no book for this semester, readings will be handed out in class]

Next week (week 2) you will get feedback from Dr. Rivas and myself on your research plans that you submitted last semester. Dr. Rivas will be available to talk at the end of class next week. You will be revising these plans and submitting a detailed research timeline in week 3.

Week 2.

OK here we go. I got copies of almost everyone's research plan and we have feedback from me and from Dr. Rivas. We will make a quick turn around with this and create a detailed research timeline. Here is a template for the research timeline (you dont have to use this format if you dont like it). Next week we will be posting this timeline on our websites.

Week 3.

Research Issues:

  • Notes from last week
  • Factors of science teaching (handout from RAND)
  • Intervensions, Hypotheses and mechanisms
  • Parent permission forms (samples handout)
  • Survey forms (look at this next week)

Science Learning:

  • Introducing the Science Learning Wiki
  • What is a wiki? Wikipedia
  • Brainstoming about Science learning
  • Reading for next week - McClosky and comparing students learning science to history of science

Week 4.

Research Issues:

  • Survey forms (handouts of example forms and online survey)
  • Refining the timelines
  • Interview assignment

For the interview assignment you are required to complete two interviews using the same protocol (ie the same questions). Then do a partial transcription of the interviews and summarize them. To complete this assignment you need to turn in the following by week 10 (deadline is moved back significantly):

    • Your interview protocol
    • Partial transcripts of the interviews
    • Summary (about a page) of what you learned from the interview
    • Copies of the signed informed consent documents with the names blacked out

Science Learning:

  • Working on the Science Learning Wiki (dont forget to log in!)
  • Reading - McClosky and comparing students learning science to history of science
  • Reading for next week - diSessa argues against McClosky

Week 5.

Research Issues:

  • Tracking what goes on in your classroom - notes, photocopies and videotape
  • Refining the timelines
  • Interview assignment

Science Learning:

  • Working on the Science Learning Wiki (dont forget to log in!)
  • diSessa argues against McClosky
  • What is a p-prim? how is it different from a theory?
  • Next reading - sign up for a paper, write a wiki page on it.

Week 6.

Research Issues:

  • Practice coding - educational technology survey -create coding key for the data

Science Learning:

  • Working on the Science Learning Wiki (dont forget to log in!)
  • putting diSessa on the board
  • Cleaning up the structure and adding more pages
  • Everyone needs to make a "significant contribution" (what does that mean?)
  • Pick up a reading for next week - add something to the wiki about your reading (good or bad - what does it contribute)

Week 7.

Research Issues:

  • Stories from the field? Problems so far?
  • Research Reports

Science Learning:

  • Working on the Science Learning Wiki (dont forget to log in!)
  • Editing the Learning Science Pages - what is left to do?
  • What is so hard about learning? What is Productive Thinking?

Science Labs

Week 8.

Research Issues:

  • Research Reports

Science Labs

  • DiscussAmerica's Lab Report (your read the summary for 695 last month - remember)
  • Review of the Science Learning Wiki - what did we learn about science learning?
    • possible position paper topics
      • Theory Theory vs Knowledge in Pieces
      • Should we call them "misconceptions"?
      • How is students' science learning similar to the history of science
  • Begin to work on the Hands-on science debate
  • Readings for this week Mayer on discovery learning and Gee on video games

  • Think you are the only group stuck doing this wiki thing? check this out

Week 9& 10

Research Issues:

  • Research Reports

Science Labs

Week 11 Stats - meet in 2117

Stats Lab

Week 12

  • Research Reports - final reports?
  • Take a look at the draft portfolio guidelines
  • Discuss reading (Singer et al) - what do we conclude about science inquiry? (what about the Wiki )
  • Help out the TNE projects by fixing their survey
  • Two evaluations - class and wiki suvey
  • Two short readings for the holiday week ("Schools for Thought" excerpt and "A world of difference"
  • After the break - Assessment
  • No class next week - HOLIDAY enjoy your turkey-like meal

Week 14

And just like that we are at week 14 of the semester (of 16!). We have only two things more to do - the 3rd topic for the wiki (Assessment) and the position paper. The goal of the wiki is to maintain a database of information about science education that is valuable for writing and evaluating position papers.

Topics for this week:

  • MA portfolio comes closer to focus
  • Registering for spring classes
  • Position paper guidelines
  • Assessment - what are the issues?
  • Assessment readings - choose one or find one of your own
    • Wiki outlines and who is doing what
  • Next week - Assessment sense making and more stats, bring your data! (people who have had enough stats can leave early)
