SED 514Computers in Instruction ACT Fridays 1-4pm ED 2121B- Foley Announcements Week 15. The assignment this week is do a TPE write-up of an artifact which involves education technology. Assignment 10 is very simple simple create an TPE write-up having to do with technology. To do this assignment you need to identify an "artifact" to write up. An artifact is a document, picture, media or other object which demonstrates your understanding of an important aspect of teaching called a TPE (teacher performace expectations). There are 13 TPEs that you can prepare an artifact for. The PTP website describes the TPEs in great detail. You need to identify an artifact to use. For assignment 10 you must write up an artifact that has something to do with technology. This could be a computer based lesson that you have prepared (we did at least two of these this semester) or some information that you used technology to develop (e.g. a photographic seating chart or a class website). NOTE: a requriment for the PTP is that one of your artifaces for TPE 4 or 5 must be a lesson plan that incorporates technology. So writing up TPE 4 or 5 for this assignment ca also help you meet this requirement. Finally we are ready to turn in all the work from the semester. Get all your files together (checklist) and create a "README" file. Then burn all your files to a blank CD-R.
Previous Announcements Week 14. - Teacher Tools This is the last week for new technology tools - we are working on Assignment 9 Teacher Tools. This week we will look at spreadsheets (Excel - here is a movie showing how to make a graph) and specialized grading software (Easy Grade Pro).Take an online quiz about this course. Then we will see how to create online assessments with phpESP or www.quia.com. Finally we will explore simple things like puzzlemaker and how to make award documents (online tools, also, downloads and how to guide). Week 13. - Interactive Software This week we are looking at computer software to use with/by students. In the old days, software was something that came on a floppy disc or CD. But the web is getting to be more and more interactive, and we want to include that in our discussion. So instead of just looking at "software" and ignoring the web, we will look at all things that are educational and interactive. What is interactive? In Assignment 8 you will evaluate a piece of interactive software for your subject area. We have several sources of software. In the mac lab, look at the "CD SERVER" and "ED5_MAC" you will find lots of good (some dated) titles. If you see something here you like, check and see if it is still available on amazon. For web stuff you can find a lot with google or check sites like funbrain.com and Here are some software titles to get you started, but you are NOT LIMITED TO THESE:
NEW - Post summaries of your software reviews on the wiki page Week 11. - Teaching with the Internet This week we trying to apply technology directly to our own teaching. What better way to do that then to create a technology based lesson plan. This lesson plan could be used as an artifact for a TPE (which can also be assignment 10 for this class). We will look at webquests as one way to use the internet and bring rich resources into the classroom. We will also finally get to work in groups on the lesson planning project. In Assignment 7 you will search different types of resources for information for your class. Here are some useful links for completing this assignment:
Week 9. Internet Resources From this point on, it is no longer required that you submit assignments to the instructor (this applies to assignments 6-10). However you can still do this to get feedback on your work if you want. You still submit assignments 1-5 if you have not done this already. This week we are looking at ways to find resources on the web. In Assignment 6 you will search for different types of information that will be of use to teachers. Here are some useful links for completing this assignment:
Week 8. Today's topic is online communications. We will look at 4 different types: email, chat, bullitin boards and wikis. In order to do this we will used webmail, a free chat room ,the discussion board for this class (top of this page), and the LNwiki. Week 7. Announcement about Nov 10 - this is Veterans Day so there will be no class. I have revised the schedule to account for this. We will start by taking a look at each others websites and technology survey reports. What technology is available? How easy is it to use? What technologies are needed in different places? How does one get more technology for their school? (here is one way - write a grant) On to Assignment 4. To do this you also need to download the plagerism doc. The first thing you need to do with this document is to open it in Word and then turn off the spell checker. (this is in the preferences: uncheck "check spelling as you type" and "check grammar as you type"). You will soon see why you need to do this. Week 6. We are moving on from web pages to look at some other technologies that are useful for teachers. This week we will be working with computer graphics - finding, scanning and editing images. Even though google images is very useful, sometimes we need to make our own pictures (or at least edit something). We will be working with Photoshop Elements (the low cost version of photoshop). For even lower cost ($0) you can download a program called GIMP. Assignment 3 takes you through some of the basics of using graphics in the classroom. I am behind in my grading (already) but assignmens 1 & 2 will be returned this week. Week 5. Publishing Day! We need to get our websites published by putting them on the u-drive. Copy all your files (.html and images) - in the same relative position as on your local machine. Then try out your URL http://www.csun.edu/~yourlogin (replace "yourlogin" with the letters and numbers of your own login). If you see the message "Forbidden" then you will need help fixing the problem. If you see "File Not Found" then you typed something wrong. I am still working on Assignment 1 - I will get you comments on those soon. Besides publishing our websites we have two other things to do: 1) finish with Assignment 2, and 2) create a website with the technology resournces for your school/class. Here are some old pages that might give you some ideas: We will create a list of class websites so everyone can see each others' pages. Week 4. We will start by finishing up Assignment 1 and putting it into the drop box. In order to do this we need to learn about binary numbers (powerpoint). Once you are finished with this assignment, click on the drop box to send it to me. If you get an error it may be becasue the file is too big (2MB is the maximum for the drop box). Big files you can just email to me or leave on ed5_temp (send me an email where to find it). Then we will take the first step towards making our own web pages. We will begin with Assignment 2. We will be using the free program called NVu. This tool is a free (open source) tool that you can download and use at home as well. Here is a NVu how-to handout. To post our web pages we will use the u-drive which you can access from home or school (how to access Udrive). For more infromation on this go to the ITR page on web publishing. Week 3. We will start with our discussion of the Warschauer article. What does it tell us about how the way we use technology has implications for social justice. You should have already posted your thoughts on the discussion board. The big topic for today is that we are starting our first of the 10 assignments for this course. Assignment 1 is all about computer basics: hardware, operating systems, software, and of course binary numbers! Once you are finished with this assignment, click on the drop box to send it to me. If you get an error it may be becasue the file is too big (2MB is the maximum for the drop box). Big files you can just email to me or leave on ed5_temp (send me an email where to find it). REMEMBER - you are only submitting a draft of this assignment. Nothing is turned in until the end. Be sure to save a copy of your file because I do not send it back to you! Week 2. This week we have several things to do that we did not get to last week. We have to finish our powerpoint presentations, discuss powerpoint and technology in general, and talk about the technology inventory form. (Due date 10/6 - in three weeks!). Then we will talk about in actual educational value of powerpoint (read this). Then we will look at a second software tool call Inspiration that allows us to do concept mapping (here is a link to a free CM tool ).
We probably dont have time to talk about the overview chapter on the use of technology in schools, but you can look at other people's reaction online with the class discussion board. Reading for this week discusses the digital divide - the phenomena where the introduction of computers in schools tends to increase rather that decrease the gap between the rich and poor schools. We will talk about this on the discussion board as well. This is the last major reading for this class! Week 1. Welcome to SED 514. This class introduces teachers to some of the uses for computers in their teaching. The class will cover basics of computer use as well as resources for teachers, how to prepare digital media, use networks for communicating with students and how to prepare computer based lesson plans. The structure of the course is straight forward: there are 10 assignments to be completed in 15 weeks. We will spend a couple of weeks to get to know the computers (windows) and then start on assignment 1 in week 3.
This week we will just get introduced and play around with Powerpoint. We will take a short technology survey and homework this week is to read an overview chapter on the use of technology in schools. In coming weeks we will be conducting a survey of education technology. If you want to get a head start on this you can download the technology inventory form. (Due date TBA)
