Text: Elementary Statistics, 11th edition by Mario F. Triola, Addison-Wesley Publishing, 2010. This book is available in the CSUN bookstore in the loose-leaf format and in the e-book format, and comes with access to Course Compass (see below). If you buy the book elsewhere, please be aware that you will have to pay an additional amount to get access to Course Compass.

Additional Requirement: Course Compass. The course ID that you'll need is sethuraman47703 --- See below.

Supplemental Instruction: There is a voluntary SI section for this class, led by Trinidad Trejo. It meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 4:50PM in BH 317. You need to sign up with Trini for it.

Syllabus:  Methods for displaying, describing, and producing data. The normal distribution. Correlation and regression. Sampling distributions and probability. Statistical inference for means and proportions. If time allows other material will be covered, too.

Chapters in the book:  Here are the chapters and sections we will cover: Chapter 1 (1.1-1.5), Chapter 2 (2.1-2.5), Chapter 3 (3.1-3.4), Chapter 4 (4.1-4.2), Chapter 5 (5.1-5.4), Chapter 6 (6.1-6.6), Chapter 7 (7.1-7.5), Chapter 8 (8.1-8.6), Chapter 9 (9.1-9.5), Chapter 10 (10.1-10.4), Chapter 11 (11.1-11.3), Chapter 12 (12.1-12.3), and Chapter 13 (13.6) as time permits.

Calculators:  You will need a simple scientific calculator for the course.

Quizzes and Tests:
Quizzes will be assigned via Course Compass. There will be two midterm tests for the course, and a final. The final is on MAY 11, 2010 05:30 PM - 07:30 PM.

Homework: Will be assigned every week, often more than one per week, and will be done via Course Compass (see below).

Grading:
The course grade will computed based on the following percentages:

Final Exam                        30%            (cumulative final)
Midterm Tests                  50%

Quizzes                             10%            (I will drop the lowest two quiz grades)

Homework (SI and Course Compass)       10%
( I will drop the lowest two homework grades)

Final grades will be assigned according the following percentage ranges:

A:    91--100    A-:    90
B+:   87--89      B:   81--86      B-:   80
C+:   77--79      C:   70--76
D:    55--69
F:    Below 55

Makeup Exams: In general, there will be no makeups on homework or quizzes.  As for the midterm tests and the final, if there are any dire situations such as emergencies, then I will consider on a case-by-case basis, but do not expect to get a makeup. Please be aware that even if one student has to take a make up exam, then my workload is doubled and my schedule is completely thrown off, so please request make ups only for serious situations.

Class Discipline: Please be aware that particularly because this is a large class, it is absolutely critical to behave in a disciplined manner in class. Talking during lectures, entering the classroom late, leaving the classroom early, all disrupt the class very significantly, and will not be allowed. I will call on offenders, and will take appropriate action (including taking points off the course total, removing from the class roster) if the student does not voluntarily control his/her behavior. Please also be aware that there are very strict university rules concerning academic dishonesty. Any student caught violating basic rules of academic honesty during exams will be summarily removed from the class.

Course Compass:

Your course ID is sethuraman47703

Course Compass is an online program that comes with the book (if bought at the bookstore). All homeworks and quizzes will be done via Course Compass, and therefore, it is essential that you have access to Course Compass.

To log on to Course Compass, see the attached file.

As we proceed through the semester, I will be turning on assignments and quizzes in Course Compass. Note that you can attempt your homework as many times as you want. You have only one attempt (and a total of 45 minutes) for each quiz. It is expected that you do the homework first and then the quizzes.
