Event With Dr. Yolanda Chavez Leyva

Applied, or public, history engages our communities with their histories and makes connections between the past and the present.  This presentation explores the work of Paso del Sur, a grassroots organization, and Museo Urbano, an award-winning public history project, in south side barrios in El Paso, Texas.  Paso del Sur emerged in 2006 in response to the City of El Paso's plan to demolish the heart of one of the most historic Mexican barrios, Union Plaza or Duranguito.  Residents, small merchants, and Paso del Sur opposed this demolition and displacement as well, using history and social media to resist the City.
