Watts Tower Documentary to Screen at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 5, 2005) -- "I Build the Tower," a feature-length documentary on the Watts Towers and their creator, Sam Rodia, by Cal State Northridge cinema and television arts lecturer Edward Landler, will be shown on campus on Tuesday, April 19.

The screening will take place at 7 p.m. in the Alan and Elaine Armer Theater on the first floor of Manzanita Hall at the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge. Landler and his fellow filmmaker, Rodia's great-nephew Brad Byer, will be present for a discussion after the screening. Admission is free.

The film depicts the life of immigrant Italian artist Sam Rodia, who single-handedly created the monumental mosaic-covered spires of reinforced cement that make up the towers. Landler and Byer were able to tap into archival and family materials as well as the memories of Watts community members. They even visited Rodia's Italian birthplace and the San Francisco Bay area where he lived before and after his years in Watts.

The music for the film--based upon Verdi aria themes--was arranged for classical orchestration and ensemble by Robert Israel and for jazz ensemble by Nate Morgan. It also features a hip-hop song-- conceived and arranged by Byer and Landler, with Rodia himself as lead vocalist--and music composed and arranged by Michael Abels.
