CSUN Presents an 'Evening with Yoji Sakate and Rinko-gun'

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif, Feb. 8, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge's Department of Theatre will present a special screening of a film of the Rinko-gun Theatre Company's production of Yaneura (Attic) and a discussion with writer/director Yoji Sakate on Monday, Feb. 14.

"An Evening with Yoji Sakate and Rinko-Gun" will take place at 8 p.m. In the Campus Theatre, located in Nordhoff Hall on the southwest corner of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.

Joining Sakate will be a panel of experts on modern Japanese theatre: professors Carol Fisher Sorgenfrei of UCLA, John D. Swain of CSU Long Beach and Kevin J. Wetmore of Cal State Northridge.

Yaneura (Attic) is a collection of two dozen disconnected episodes looking at an emerging issue in Japan, hikikomori (withdrawn), which refers to people in their teens or twenties who have shut themselves in their rooms and refuse contact with the outside world. The play premiered in April 2002 in Tokyo, winning the prestigious Yomiuri Literature Award and the Kinokuniya Theatre Award for Best Director for Sakate.

A filmed performance was broadcast nationally in Japan last year. It is this performance, in Japanese with English subtitles, that will be shown on Feb. 14 in Nordhoff Hall.

Tickets are $5 for general admission and $2 for students. To purchase tickets, call (818) 677-2488. Daily permit parking is available on campus for $4.

For more information about the evening, call (818) 677-3086.
