Watts Tower Documentary by CSUN Lecturer
Opens at Pan-African Film Festival
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Feb. 8, 2005) -- "I Build the Tower," a feature-length documentary on the Watts Tower by Cal State Northridge cinema and television arts lecturer Edward Landler, will open in Los Angeles at the Pan African Film Festival on Sunday, Feb. 13.
The premiere will take place at 4:20 p.m. at the Magic Johnson Theatres at 3650 Martin Luther King Blvd. Landler and his fellow filmmaker, Rodia's great nephew Brad Byer, will be on hand to answer questions after the screening.
The film depicts the life of immigrant Italian artist Sam Rodia, who single-handedly created the monumental mosaic-covered spires of reinforced cement that make up the Watts Towers. Landler and Byer were able to tap into archival and family materials as well as the memories of Watts community members. They even visited Rodia's Italian birthplace and the San Francisco Bay area where he lived before and after his years in Watts.
The music for the film--based on Verdi aria themes--has been arranged for classical orchestration and ensemble by Robert Israel and for jazz ensemble by Nate Morgan. It also features a hip-hop song--conceived and arranged by Byer and Landler--with Rodia himself as lead vocalist and music composed and arranged by Michael Abels.
