CSUN to Host a Day for People Who Care for Others
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 1, 2005) -- Hundreds of people throughout Southern California devote their days to caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's. It's a job that can be demanding, emotionally as well as physically, and many caregivers rarely find time to devote to themselves.
Cal State Northridge's Department of Health Sciences is teaming up with the Alzheimer's Association of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties to host a day, April 16, devoted entirely to people who care for their loved ones.
"We know that caring for a loved one with memory impairment takes time and stamina," said Debra Sheets, an assistant health sciences professor and coordinator of the university's interdisciplinary gerontology program. "However, one of the best ways of helping your loved one is making sure you take care of yourself."
"This Day's for You" will offer workshops, presentations and other opportunities to learn how to deal with the stress of caring for an ailing loved one while taking care of one's own health and well being.
The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Grand Salon of the University Student Union on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Street.
A $15 fee pays for all workshops, handouts, lunch and parking. Free and/or low-cost respite care will be available. Pre-registration is required.
