Broadway Comes to Cal State Northridge
with Musical Theater Fundraiser
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 23, 2005) -- The public is invited to witness Broadway come alive onstage at Cal State Northridge with the musical theater production of "An Afternoon of Musical Theater."
The show will take place on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m. at the university's Music Recital Hall, located in the southwest part of campus at 18111 Nordhoff Street in Northridge.
The production will feature Broadway stars Diane Ketchie, who is part of the music department's faculty, and husband Raymond Saar. Both stars have extensive musical theater backgrounds.
The event also will highlight the diverse talents of students within the Northridge departments of music and theater.
"(The show) is good entertainment," said Bernice Haber, event coordinator and chair. "They are good singers. People should come for pure entertainment and to serve a good cause."
Proceeds from ticket sales benefit the university's Arts Council Student Awards Program that grants scholarships to students within the art, music and theater departments.
A music professor since 1999, Ketchie earned a bachelor's degree in voice and piano from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master's degree from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Ketchie also studied at the Opernschule of the Hochshule fŸr Musik in Germany on scholarship.
She has since performed with several symphonies and opera companies throughout the United States and made her Broadway debut in "Phantom of the Opera."
Saar has performed in Andrew Lloyd Webber's San Francisco production of "Phantom of the Opera," Sammy Cahn's musical "Words
and Music," "Les Miserable" on Broadway and "The King And I" national tour.
He also has guest soloed with several symphonies throughout the United States and has made television appearances on "General Hospital," "Good Morning America," Jerry Lewis Telethon" and "The Tonight Show."
Saar has produced orginal programs such as "The Best Broadway," featuring the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and "A Gershwin Celebration."
Tickets cost $50 for center seating and $35 for side seating. Seats can be reserved by calling 818-677-2488. Tickets also can be purchased at the door one hour before show time. Tickets are tax deductable.
A reception will follow the performance.
"It will be a pleasant afternoon and for a good cause," said Haber.
