Metrolink Collision Update / Counseling Services Available

The following provides an update to the President's earlier message on this incident that was posted on September 14, 2008 (see below for earlier message).

September 18, 2008

To the Campus Community:

As an update to my messages over the weekend following the collision of Metrolink #111, I am grateful to report that both staff members identified in the September 14 message are now recovering from the injuries they sustained.

We have also learned that another of our students, Antonio Martinez, a freshman, was aboard Metrolink #111 and sustained injuries from which he is currently recovering.

Sadly, we have also learned that one of our alumna, Beverly R. Mosley ’99 (Speech Communication) is among the deceased.  Ms. Mosley was employed by Kaiser Permanente as a Health Care Mediator.

Many members of our campus community were affected by this tragedy, especially those with family members, friends, and neighbors who were directly involved.  Our thoughts and condolences go out to all and we wish the injured a speedy and full recovery.

A Community Observance commemorating the victims will be held on Friday, September 19, 2008, beginning at 6:15 p.m. at the Simi Valley Metrolink Station, 5050 Los Angeles Avenue, led by Simi Valley Police Department Chaplains. Additional information is available by calling the Community Services Department at 805.583.6861.

To the Campus Community:

I am writing in follow up to my message to the campus community Saturday following the tragic collision that occurred on the late afternoon of Friday, September 12, involving Metrolink #111.

As of this writing on Sunday, we know that at least two Cal State Northridge staff members and one student were aboard this Metrolink train.

I am deeply saddened that our student, Aida Magdaleno, whose name has been mentioned in media reports, is among the fatalities. A tribute to Ms. Magdaleno published by the Daily Sundial is available at:

http://sundial.csun.edu/csun_student_among_the_25_dead_at_metrolink_crash

We also have confirmed that one of our staff members aboard the train, Eric Forbes, Director of Admissions and Records, was treated for bruising at a local hospital but has now been released and is recovering at home. As of this writing, the other staff member aboard the train, Beatrice Watts, administrative support in Admissions and Records, remains in critical but stable condition.

I know all of you join me in conveying our thoughts and condolences to the family of Ms. Magdaleno, as well as to all the victims and their families, friends, and loved ones. Our good wishes also go to the survivors for a full and speedy recovery. I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Forbes and the family of Ms. Watts over the weekend. Mr. Forbes spoke of the acts of heroism he witnessed after the accident, and of the caring assistance that he and the passengers received both from people in the community and the professional responders.

Given the magnitude and circumstances of this tragedy, and the way it has personally impacted in varying ways members of our campus family, University Counseling Services is prepared to assist those members of our campus community in need of support. University Counseling Services is located in Bayramian Hall, Suite 520, and may be reached at 818.677.2366 (extension 2366 from a campus phone).

We understand from media reports today that MTA plans to operate buses as alternate transportation for those affected by any closures of the Metrolink line. Additionally, Cal State Northridge shuttles will pick up at the Northridge Station or at the Chatsworth Station if necessary. Alternative transportation may involve delays. We ask all departments to accommodate as appropriate those whose commutes may be affected by this incident. Metrolink riders from the campus community who find themselves without service should contact the campus Department of Public Safety at 818.677.2111 for assistance.

We know that such an event and its aftermath may be challenging and stressful for members of our campus community. I am confident that we can come together in this difficult time to provide support and reassurance to one another other.
