To the Campus Community:
I am pleased to announce the inaugural Freshman Convocation which will be held on the Oviatt Lawn on Thursday, September 6, 2007, at 6 p.m. The purpose of the convocation is to welcome our freshman class as participants in our university community and inspire them as they begin their academic journey at Cal State Northridge.
I hope all CSUN faculty and staff also will be able to attend this important inaugural convocation.
The program will be highlighted with a keynote address by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., an internationally recognized environmental activist, who will discuss the role that our natural surroundings play in our work, our health and our identity. His speech, "Our Environmental Destiny," uses examples gathered from art, history, litigation and literature.
The Convocation Planning Committee has endeavored to create a program that can be integrated into the fall semester curriculum in a variety of ways. Dr. Cheryl Spector, Director, Academic First Year Experience (ext. 3932), is available to assist faculty who wish to more fully incorporate the event into their classroom efforts. Faculty may ask their students to attend this event and use the content for class discussion.
The committee has created a one-page announcement/FAQ about the Freshman Convocation for your information, located at the following link:
Once the processional of the freshman class is completed and those students are seated, remaining seating will be open to faculty, staff and other students. It may be that there will be standing-room-only success for our inaugural effort. In that case, we ask your cooperation in viewing the event from a standing location in the Sierra Quad.
I look forward to seeing you at the inaugural Freshman Convocation in September.
As a reminder, the President's Convocation for all faculty and staff is scheduled for Tuesday, August 21, on the Oviatt Lawn.
