Message from President Koester to the Campus Community

To the campus community,

As you may know, a California State University, Northridge student was charged yesterday (January 13) with possession of a firearm and explosive materials on campus.  He was arraigned today and remains in custody. 

By way of further background, the student’s family brought concerns about their son to the attention of Cal State Northridge professional staff. Following appropriate campus protocols an assessment was made and it was determined that the student needed hospitalization. After the student was transported to a hospital facility, he was subsequently released to University Police and arrested on weapons and explosive materials charges. 

While the immediate threat has been removed from the campus, and the student is no longer enrolled, the University will continue to monitor and take appropriate actions as warranted by any change in the individual’s status. Timely action by University professionals was made possible by proactive communication and cooperation from the family, collaboration between campus units, and the existence of campus protocols to assess and deal with such situations.

I want everyone to be assured that the safety and well-being of our campus community is of paramount importance at California State University, Northridge. In the event of any threat to campus safety, the University is prepared to assess and address the situation promptly and with university-wide cooperation.
