Image for In Protest: the Shifting Paradigms of Collective Social ActionIn Protest: the Shifting Paradigms of Collective Social Action

Tuesday, September 17 - Friday, July 25 All Day - Oviatt Library, Tseng Gallery
http://library.csun.edu/blogs/goingson/in-protest/

Collective social action movements, whether spontaneous expressions of dissent or high-reaching attempts to change society, have been a part of American life since the nation's earliest days. Protest actions, in the form of boycotts, demonstrations, riots, property destruction, occupations, labor strikes, local activism, or works of art, have spanned the political spectrum, defined generations, and shaped our uniquely American identity.

We invite you to view items from the Oviatt Library's Special Collections and Archives that document dozens of distinct and significant social action movements over the course of the 20th century

“Energy Alternatives for California's Future:
Environmental and Occupational Health Aspects”
March 5, 2014 California State University, Northridge
Rising energy costs and increased awareness among the public are finally starting to force global leaders to research alternatives, and provide funding, to develop renewable energy production. Issues like global warming are becoming mainstream reality and causing world-wide concerns about pollution and consumption. In this symposium, we will consider not only the need for change, but also the environmental and occupational health challenges that will accompany large-scale changes to various forms of renewable energy production. Our proposed program includes the topics of climate change, renewable energy regula-tions and policies, sustainability considerations, fossil fuels, solar and wind generation, and toxins associated with energy production and utilization.
Program and registration details will be available early January 2014. For additional information at this time please send your request to eohalumni@csun.com or call Bob Finkelstein at 818-383-4171
Our program will offer 8 hours of Continuing Education Credits for CIH, CSP, REHS, and other organizations

Psychology Department Spring Speaker Series

11:00 am - 1:00 pm - Sierra Hall 322

New Research on Beliefs about Repressed Memories and False Memories

In this talk the author discusses the phenomena known as the memory wars, and presents on two of his recently published studies. The first part of the talk deals with an apparent gap in beliefs between researchers and practitioners about whether repressed memories happen and can be retrieved in therapy accurately. The second part of the talk deals with what could possibly explain some of the more unusual memories that have been generated in therapies that try to retrieve repressed memories. The author presents data showing that even when you bend over backwards to find participants that are most likely not to be susceptible to false memories, they in fact are. This could be seen as what Karl Popper would have called a "risky experiment"of memory distortion paradigms, an approach of attempted falsification that Popper argued is important in science.

Grammy Award-winner Bela Fleck is quite possibly the premier banjo player in the world. He has virtually reinvented the image and the sound of the banjo through a remarkable performing and recording career that has taken him all over the musical map and on a range of solo projects and collaborations. This performance with Brooklyn Rider is a match made in heaven. Brooklyn Rider's desire to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for communication across a large span of history, geography and genres fuses perfectly with Bela Fleck's inventive imagination. This is classical music as reinvented and revived by five forward looking musical innovators.

This Valentine's evening the renowned Moscow Festival Ballet brings two of the most romantic classical works to the Valley Performing Arts Center. Often described as a "romantic reverie," Chopiniana portrays a dream-world where ballerinas bathed in moonlight dance around a young poet. The enchanting oeuvre is realized through the music of Chopin and the choreography of Mikhail Fokine. Shakespeare's tragic love story is beautifully danced to Tchaikovsky's majestic score and illuminated with brilliant choreography and radiant costumes in the grand tradition of Russian ballet.

Curated by CSUN’s Art History Professor Mario Ontiveros, this exhibition focuses on eight Los Angeles-based artists who reconfigure the genre of self-portraiture. Utilizing their body, their likeness, and/or the intimately personal, the artists encourage an investigation into representation that lingers somewhere between its construction in response to material, psychic, and sociopolitical conditions and those personas that one imagines, shuns and/or desires. Artists include Michael Alvarez, Yreina Cervantez, Christina Fernández, Harry Gamboa Jr., Sandra de la Loza, Shizu Salamando, Ana Serrano and Mario Ybarra Jr. A full color catalog on the exhibition will be available for purchase.

“The Good News on Global Violence Reduction, the Bad News on America, and How Interfaith Relations Can Help Shape our Future”

Presented by Professor Marc Gopin

Is violence in America an inevitable part of American life?

Although media reports suggest otherwise, the scientific reality is that violence across the globe has been plummeting in recent decades. Why and how is this happening? Research is showing that our values, attitudes, and thoughts have a great deal to do with our evolution away from violence. Dr. Marc Gopin will help us explore how our practice of and thought about Judaism can affect our global future.

Marc Gopin (Ph.D., Ethics, Brandeis University) is the Director of the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution and the James H. Laue Professor at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in Arlington, Virginia. He was ordained rabbi at Yeshiva University and is the author of five books.

Psychology Department Spring Speaker Series

12:00 pm - 1:00 pm - Sierra Hall 322

The Psychology Department would like to invite students and faculty to a presentation delivered by Nikki Sullivan this Friday as part of the Psychology Department Spring Speaker Series. Nikki is a doctoral candidate at Caltech where she works with Professor Antonio Rangel. Nikki's research concerns neuroeconomic decision making.

Many choices in life have two features: trade-offs and future consequences. For example, selecting carrots instead of a brownie may require self-control, but will pay off in the long run. Similar trade-offs exist when saving for retirement. How and why some individuals are better at these choices than others? This talk will present two studies in two domains requiring control: dietary and inter-temporal choice. In the first study, we combine a dietary choice task with a novel form of computer mouse tracking. This allows us to pinpoint when different attributes of the choice (such as the taste and healthiness of the foods) are being integrated into the choice processes with millisecond temporal resolution. We find that 20 - 40% of observed individual differences in self-control ability can be explained by differences in the relative speed with which taste and health attributes are processed. In the second study, we compare brain activity during an inter-temporal choice task across adolescent, adult, and elderly age groups to understand how monetary self-control changes with age. We find that discounting decreases monotonically with age, and that age-related changes in brain structure and functional activation and connectivity help explain this age-related increase in control.
