Math 462
Advanced Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is fundamental to mathematics.  It is used by almost every other field within mathematics, and it is an important tool for the mathematical sciences.  This course will develop the main ideas of linear algebra from an abstract perspective.  Mathematical proofs will be an important part of this course. Topics include dimension, matrix representations of linear transformations, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, dual spaces, inner product spaces and the Spectral theorem, the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, triangulation, and Jordan canonical form.  Please expect to devote a generous amount of time to this class.

Class Meetings              Monday & Wednesdays, 5:00 to 6:15 p.m. in Jacaranda Hall 3516 (JD 3516)

Prerequisite
Completion of Math 262 and Math 320 with a grade of C or better

Grading
Plus (+) and minus (–) grades will be assigned for this course.  There will be two midterm exams, each worth 100 points, and a final exam worth 200 points. Depending on available time, there may be one or more 30 point quizzes.  The dates of the midterms and quizzes will be announced at least one week in advance in class. Class participation is encouraged and will resolve borderline grades

Final Exam:  Wednesday 12/15/2021, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Jacaranda Hall 3516

Homework
Homework assignments will be posted on this webpage (below).  Because of the easy availability of solutions on the internet, homework will not be graded and generally not turned in, however, it is extremely important to attempt solutions to all problems on your own.  Quizzes and Exams will be based on homework. Students are encouraged to work together on the homework. We will also devote class time to solutions to the assignments.

Textbook
LINEAR ALGEBRA: AN INTRODUCTION TO ABSTRACT MATHEMATICS, by Robert J. Valenza.
