UNIVERSITY COUNSELING SERVICES
Meeting the many challenges that confront a college student can at times be a stressful, lonely, and overwhelming experience.
University Counseling Services is aware of this, and in an effort to minimize these hurdles, UCS provides a range of counseling services free of charge to regularly enrolled university students. The range of programs offerred includes personal counseling (individual and group), crisis counseling, career counseling, suicide prevention services, rape prevention and counseling, dispute resolution, employee assistance, counselor training, a campus helpline, and adult re-entry services.
DIRECTORY OF SERVICES
Personal Counseling
Confidential counseling in an individual or group setting is offered by our staff of licensed counselors and psychologists to provide assistance in dealing with a wide range of personal problems. This service is provided free of charge to currently enrolled students (and is provided on a short-term basis to CSUN employees as part of our Employee Assistance Program).
Group Counseling
A variety of counseling groups are offerred each semester, and are led by licensed professionals. Group topics include self-esteem groups, incest survivor groups, procrastination groups. major and career counseling and general support groups. Group topics vary each semester, and new group topics can be arranged if requested.
Crisis Counseling
Our staff of licensed counselors are available to provide assistance in coping with a crisis or recent trauma.
Date Project (Rape Prevention)
A peer education program utilizing CSUN students who go out into the campus community and throughout the San Fernando Valley making presentations on date and acquaintance rape prevention.
Dispute Resolution Center
The DRC is available to teach conflict resolution skills, and to provide mediation services . The Center serves the entire campus community (students, faculty, staff, offices, and departments).
Employee Assistance Program
Short-term counseling (approximately 3 sessions) is available for all CSUN full and part-time faculty and staff. The focus of this short-term contact is to provide support, clarify issues, and assist in finding an appropriate referrral for long-term counseling from a licensed professional in the community.
Helpline
The CSUN Helpline is a telephone listening service for crisis listening, assistance, referrals and information. The phone number is (818) 349-HELP, and the lines are open from 6 P. M. to midnight, seven days a week.
Suicide Prevention
The Suicide Prevention Project provides trained student speakers to make presentations to classes, clubs and organizations in an effort to educate the university community about suicidal behavior, emphasizing prevention and early intervention.
Graduate Training Program
The training program provides a field placement/internship experience for CSUN graduate students, as well as for pre-doctoral interns and psychiatric residents studying in the L.A. area.
Adult Re-Entry
The Adult Resource and Re-Entry program provides counseling, information, support groups, workshops, peer mentors and volunteer opportunities for all CSUN students. Whether a students is resuming their education after an absence, is transfering from another college or university, or is a continuing CSUN student, the Adult REsorce and Re-Entry Program has services, workshops and programs that may provide assistance and support.
Major /Career Counseling
UCS offers regularly enrolled students assistance in selecting a major or career.
Jade (Joint Advocates on Disordered Eating)
UCS and the Student Health Center jointly sponsor a new peer education program dedicated to the education and prevention of eating disorders.
Relaxation Room
The Relaxation Room is a facility housed in UCS that helps students staff and faculty cope with the daily demands of living (i.e. stress). The facility has a massage chair, a 35 inch television, and stereo equipment, and a variety or video and audiotapes. The user checks out a tape and relaxes for 35-40 minutes. The service is free.
Special Events and Consultation
Counseling Services also offers a variety of other programs and presentations such as:
- Customer Service Training for campus departments
- A Burn-Out Booth to alleviate stress at finals
- Dealing with Burn-Out Workshops
- Free brochures and flyers are available that provide information about a variety of topics (e.g. Anger Management, Coping with Depression, Tips for Handling the Stress of Finals, Coping with Lingering Earthquake Jitters)
Where is UCS located?
We're located in University Park Apartments, Building 14, on the 4th floor.
How Do I Make an Appointment at UCS?
Appointments can be made simply by calling (818) 885-2366, V/TDD (818) 407-7834, or by stopping by our reception office (across the hall from the elevator).
Who's on staff?
Our counseling staff consists of licensed psychologists, social workers, and counselors. We also have graduate interns, trainees and psychiatric residents whose work is closely supervised by our licensed staff.
Is this counseling confidential?
All information disclosed within the counseling sessions in confidential and may not be released to anyone outside University Counseling Services without the client's written permission, except when required by law in cases where:
- There is a serious danger of violence to another;
- Self-injury is likely unless protective measures are taken;
- There is reason to believe that qabuse of children or elderly persons has occurred;
- Ordered by a federal or state court.
