Assignment 5 - Observation

1. Identify a social environment to which you have immediate access, such as work, school, recreation or simply a common social situations (e.g. public transportation).


2. Pursue a "Lofland" type analysis of the environment by focussing on the following:

The Setting (both physical and social)
The Acts (discrete behavior of each participant)
The Activities (collective behavior of participants)
The Meaning (participant's verbal interpretations)
The Participation (participan's style in role)
The Relationships (inter-role functioning)
3. Documant the manner in which the information in item two was collected and interpreted. State how this differs from a strategy based on other types of observations techniques (e.g. complete observation).


4. Be concise (two typed pages at most). Utilize the reference material outlined in the course summary or sociology journals or links to provide examples.
