Project VI

Pursuing the Interview

Some Initial Thoughts

This assignment consists of producing field notes documenting your two interviews. In so doing, please keep track of the following five phases of the interview process:

I. Breaking the ice

The most common topics are typically the best for initial interaction (How are you? Nice weather. Did you see the game last night?) Document what was said or done in the initial minute of the interview. Did s/he shake hands? What were the questions or comments ask or made? How did you respond?

II. Asking questions of the candidate

This phase is typically concentrated on reviewing your resume. Know it cold and always end your response to a question with a comment. Document which parts of your resume were ask about. If you believe something was left out, document how you managed to get the information back in.

III. Probing or circling back to areas for more in-depth information

If a question is not answered in depth or there is a specific job requirement, an interviewer will come back to the topic with additional questions. Make note of the re-occurring questions and intuit what is the most important issue to the interviewer.

IV. Directing questions to the recruiter

This is the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of the organization. Therefore, use it to acquire knowledge of the organization and to demonstrate what you know and how your experience is relevant to the job. Document what you ask and how the interviewer responds to your questions.

V. Following up and going over next steps

The last phase involves instructions as to the next step in the evaluation procedure. If not specifically told, be sure to ask for a time to next talk. Note how well the interviewer keeps you apprised. and what last questions you asked.

Please submit these notes in class by May 2nd.
