Project III
Investigating the Job Market
As before, this assignment contains two parts:
Part I - Now that you have an inventory of your personal strengths and weaknesses and have compared them to potential
job categories, we need to get specific. For this first part, I want you to cull the job listing sources for specific
job openings, preferably those chosen from the matches you made in Project II. Use outside formal sources, such
as the web (see references in part III of your booklet), classifieds, the United States Employment Service, etc.
Also use informal and indirect sources as well. That is, talk to your friends, neighbors, relatives, professors,
co-workers and counselors, as well as conduct "informational interviews" with people working in the field(s)
you have choosen to focus on (see your booklet for tips on how to make contacts and types of questions to ask).
In so doing, try to abstract the qualities of the specific jobs your are concentrating on. Choose three such jobs
and summarize your findings in part I with respect to them. Remember, continuing your education beyond the B.A.
is a job, in and of itself. Feel free to include it as one of your choices.
Part II - Prioritize the list of pros and cons for each of the jobs summarized in part I, with respect to your
abilities and experiences. Examine whether these "matches" are consistent with where you envision being
employed after graduation. Remember, many factors come into play here aside from your training and the job qualificaitons--things
like geographical relocation, salary, working conditions, etc. Be sure to take these into account. After considering
all these factors, choose one job from the list of three and state why it deserves closer attention.
Please submit these responses to your Moodle Forum by March 14th. If you have questions in the meantime, please
