Project I

Assessing the Sociology Job Market

This assignment contains three parts:

1. The Qualitative Portion

You must conduct at least three interviews from among a pool of working sociologists. Ask each person from what institution they received their degree, the subject area and on what basis did they decided to do what they are now doing. Do a content analysis of the responses and take note of any similarities or themes, supporting any conclusions you may have come to.

2. The Quantitative Portion

Search at least three sources from among the web, journals, newspapers, books or data depositories that will give you a statistical overview of sociology job market. Be sure to include jobs that overlap with other occupations (e.g. social workers). Note your sources through citations.

3. The Written Portion

Prepare a written summary of your findings. For the statistical summary, please include a table or graph of the relevant percentages of sociologists employed in the various occupations and your citations for such findings. If you are unfamiliar with how to cite references look here.  Title your text message, "Project I". Please submit no later than February 13th on your personal Moodle page, if you want feedback. Otherwise the hardcopy is due on February 14th in class.
