Assignment #9 - Content Analysis

When you have completed these questions, click here or submit them through the forms input found in the virtual discussions page of our class homepage.

1. Purchase a copy of this week's T.V. Guide. Divide the content into morning, daytime, evening and late night programming.

2. Provide a "sampling frame" by enumerating the programs in each category. Do a simple random sampling from each time slot (ten programs each).

3. Content analyse each of these sampling units, using the "theme" as the unit of analysis (i.e. what type of show - talk, soap, etc.). Report the frequency of occurance for each theme by time slot.

4. Develop a "theory" of programming for television by comparing the themes in each time slot. Do these themes vary by time slot? By channel? By day of the week?

Be sure to include a copy of the coding categories, the frequency counts and to identify the themes each program applies to.
