Assessing Your Sociological

Knowledge and Skills



This assignment contains two parts:


1. Part Ia - Assessing your personality / self-knowledge (Please review and answer the following 10 statements / questions):

a. Am I a self-starter or not? Why?

b. Am I an introvert or extrovert? Why?

c. Am I organized or disorganized? Why?

d. Do I work better alone or in collaboration? Why?

e. Am I typically punctual or tardy? Why

f. Am I flexible or impatient? Why?

g. Am I persistent or give up easily? Why?

h. Am I dependable or "flake" often? Why?

i. Am I likely to lead or follow in group activities? Why?

j. Finally, answer the question "Who Am I?" with 20 statements.

2. Part Ib - Assessing your Functional Skills

a. Give an example of when you have communicated well. What was it about that situation that facilitated your communication?

b. Give an example of when you have demonstrated leadership. What was it about that situtation that facilitated your leadership?

c. Give an example of when you have demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity. What was it about that situation that facilitated your sensitivity?

d. Give an example of when you have demonstrated origanizational skills. What was it about that situation that facilitated your organization?

From the answers in part Ia and Ib, try to formulate a summary personality profile about who you are. This summary profile is the answer to section one of Project II.


3. Part II - Assessing your sociological training and Job skills.

a. Start by listing all of the courses you have taken in sociology. Give a one paragraph summary of what each entailed.

b. Next, list any functional or job skill you feel you may have learned during the process (think broadly; critical thinking is as much a skill as statistical or SPSS training is).

c. Now list from Project I, the job skills you think are evident in the job categories your have summarized.

d. Place the two lists next to each other and identify any items the same on both lists.


Summarize your findings by focussing on the jobs your skills best match. If your job of interest does not match any of your skills, make a list of the skills you would likely need to get there. What sociology or other courses would likely give you that experience? This summary is the answer to section two of Project II.
