| In unstained tissue, the fiber areas appear white or light because of the myelin sheath surrounding the axons. Cell bodies do not have a myelin covering, so areas in which cell body density is greater appear slightly darker and greyish. This relationship is the basis for the terms gray matter(cells) and white matter (axons). |
