Welcome to Lesson Design Study
Week 4   February 24
  • Objective:  Gain skill in transferring and implementing knowledge of students’ backgrounds, interests, life experiences and prior knowledge into effective instructional design of learning experiences for all students.


  • Warm Up: Multicultural Bingo  (an activity that encourages exploration of shared and diverse cultural aspects).

Session Topics/Activities:
  • Small Group Discussion Activity
  • We have read two articles on autobiographical inquiry and telling our teacher stories.  After discussing your overall response to the ideas and challenges discussed in the Gomez Article -  Telling our teacher stories—identify the ways in which ongoing inquiry (Henderson) and collegial exchange might assist you in your induction years.

Reviewing and Processing the M & M Math
  • What were the processes that promoted engagement (constructivist principles)?
  • What parts of the lesson provided opportunity to learn about students?
  • What parts of the lesson provided for the development of social skills or habits of mind for students?
  • How can we identify “research” lessons for our lesson study that will provide multi-dimensional  opportunities to learn how students learn?

3. Research Lesson Discussion
  • Join a group based on one of the following criteria:
  • Your schools are in close geographic proximity
  • You teach the same grade levels
  • You teach the same curricula (math, science, social studies).

  • Read: Leading Lesson Study  CHS. 2, 3 & 4
  • View:  The TIMMS study site –select a video clip from 2 classrooms of your choice
  • Complete:   Domain 1 and Domain 2  of Framework for Teaching and then Self Assess Your Practice
  • Journal:  Reflect on the levels of performance that you have identified and how you plan to improve your self-efficacy.
