Academy High School
With the goal of providing direct community input into the design of the Academy High School project at Cal State Northridge, the Los Angeles Unified School District and CSUN agreed to convene a community Site Advisory Committee to review and make recommendations on the design concept for the project. The nine-member committee included representatives of the following pertinent interest groups: local homeowners, the business community, elected officials, parent-teacher organizations, LAUSD students and the university, the latter as the planned host of the school site. All of the committee's meetings were publicly noticed, open to the public to attend and each session included opportunities for public comment. Click here for the full Site Advisory Committee roster. The Site Advisory Committee met four times in late 2000 to review Academy High School design concepts presented by the LAUSD's project architect, Glendale-based Leidenfrost/Horowitz and Associates. The original project design concepts underwent a series of revisions in response to many comments and suggestions from committee members and community members. At its final meeting on December 18, 2000, the Site Advisory committee members, by consensus agreement, endorsed a design concept for the proposed Academy High School that included the following components: a four-story academic/classroom building, an auditorium building, a shower/lockers facility, an open central quad area and open space for about a half-dozen paved outdoor basketball courts. Much of the Site Advisory Committee's discussion, and comment by community members, focused on traffic patterns into and out of the proposed school site, including the common desire to keep parent drop-off and pick-up traffic off adjoining Zelzah Avenue for student safety, traffic flow and other reasons. To address that issue, the design concept recommended by the Site Advisory Committee also incorporated a loop road that would surround the entire school site, providing extensive off-street drop-off/pick-up zones on the north, south and west sides of the project site.
