Stephen Sinclair's Biosketch J. Stephen
Sinclair attended college at the University of Redlands, Redlands,
California, where he received a B.A. in Government, with a minor in
History in 1969. He was commissioned in 1972 as an officer in the
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers through the ROTC program at the Colorado
School of Mines, Golden, Colorado. After returning to California,
in 1974 he received the M.S. degree in Communicative Disorders (major:
Audiology) from the University of Redlands. Entering active duty in
1974 in the Army Medical Service Corps, Dr. Sinclair served as an
Audiologist at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He separated from active duty
in 1976 in order to begin doctoral studies at Vanderbilt University,
Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Sinclair completed his studies at Vanderbilt
in 1980 with his doctorate in Hearing and Speech Sciences and a minor
field of Health Care Management. While in Nashville, he also served
as commanding officer of a 240-bed medical field clearing company
in the Army Reserve. Dr. Sinclair and his wife moved to Altadena,
California, in 1980, so that he could accept a faculty position in
Communication Disorders and Sciences at California State University
Northridge. Dr. Sinclair was tenured in 1982 and promoted to Full
Professor in 1986 at Cal State Northridge. In 1992, he became the
second person to be appointed as Chair of the Department of Communication
Disorders and Sciences since the department was established in 1974.
Dr. Sinclair presently teaches three courses: Hearing Science (undergraduate),
Research in Communication Disorders (graduate), and Interviewing and
Counseling in Communication Disorders (graduate). In the past, he
has taught courses in auditory rehabilitation, hearing aids, basic
audiometry, and auditory and vestibular diagnostics. He has co-authored
a text on auditory amplification for educational settings, published
a monograph, four book chapters, a juried proceedings, and seven papers,
as well as presented more than 40 scientific papers at professional
meetings and eight accredited short courses on a variety of topics
pertaining to Audiology. Appointed by the Governor in 1994, Dr. Sinclair
presently serves as a member of the California Speech-Language Pathology
and Audiology Board, which licenses and regulates these two professions
in the state. Dr. Sinclair is a licensed Audiologist and licensed
Hearing Aid Dispenser. He holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence
in Audiology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
and he is a certified Course Director for the Council on Accreditation
in Occupational Hearing Conservation. Dr. Sinclair maintains a practice
in Audiology which is limited to expert witness consultation in the
areas of noise-induced or trauma-induced hearing loss and balance
disorder, worker compensation for hearing loss, industrial noise safety,
and related medico-legal issues involving hearing and balance. In
1999, he completes his 27th year of commissioned service in the U.S.
