Understanding basic concepts in the theory of numerical approximation techniques.
Applications to nonlinear equations, interpolations and polynomial approximations, numerical differentiations and integrations, solving initial-value problems for ordinary differential equations, and numerically solving linear systems.
Numerical Analysis, 10th Edition, by Richard L. Burden and J. Douglas Faires, and A. M. Burden Cengage Learning, 2016. We will cover selected material from Chapters 1-7 and Chapters 9-10.
There will be 3 tests and the cumulative final exam: Tuesday, May 12, 2025, 12:45 -
14:45.
There will be 4-5 homework assignments. Homeworks will be graded. Late homeworks
will not be accepted. 20% bonus score will be added to each homework done in LaTeX.
Not taking the final exam will result in a semester letter grade WU, regardless of the
scores from the homeworks and tests.
Note: No calculators or cheat-sheets will be allowed during the tests and the final exam.
During the tests and the final exam all cellphones/tablets/laptops must be turned
off.
25% – homeworks
45% – 3 tests
30% – cumulative final exam
In some cases, I may use the ± system when assigning the final grade.
This is covered in Appendix C of the CSUN catalog. Academic dishonesty will always be reported to the Office of Student Affairs. According to CSUN policy, a grade that is sanctioned due to academic dishonesty cannot be replaced by subsequent course grades.
It is my recommendation that in order to do well in this class, a student should devote, in addition to attending lectures, at least 8-12 hours per week on studying, homeworks, and solving problems assigned during classroom sessions.
