An 'anonymous' manuscript in the Vatican Library [Baronius-Theiner 18, sub anno 1130, no. 3] gives a list of the supporters of Innocent II:

According to Onuphrio Panvinio, Epitome Pontificum Romanorum (Venetiis 1557), twenty-four cardinals followed Anacletus II (pp. 105-106), seventeen followed Innocent II [Gregory, Cardinal Deacon of S. Angelo] (p. 100). The anonymous Vaticanus writes that the party of Innocent/Gregory was better and more sane, but not that it was larger. In fact it was a minority.

According to a letter written to St. Norbert of Magdeburg by Hubert, Bishop of Lucca, the original plan, conceived as the pope was dying, was to provide a successor to Pope Honorius by the use of the Way of Compromise. Eight cardinals were to have formed the committee of election. But five Cardinal-Bishops held a secret rump election at S. Gregorio in Clivo Scauri (to which the church of S. Andrew was attached), contrary to the canons, in the middle of the night of 13/14 February, 1130, as soon as Pope Honorius was dead. This 'election' of Innocent was announced in the morning.

It was, in fact, a coup d' état, engineered by the Chancellor, Cardinal Haimeric, to the benefit of the Frangipane faction in the city. This was a repetition of the electoral violence of 1124, also led by Aymeric the Chancellor, which had forced the legitimately elected Pope Celestine II to resign, and brought Lamberto of Ostia to the throne as Honorius II. In this election of 1130, however, the clergy and people of Rome stood with Pope Anacletus and rejected the candidate of the Frangipane, "Innocent II".   Innocent and his followers were forced to flee the city, intending to retreat to France. Only Cardinal Conrad, Bishop of Sabina, a native Roman and the nephew of Pope Honorius II, was left as Innocent's Vicar of Rome.

Pietro Pierleoni, the Cardinal of S. Callisto in Trastevere, had been educated in Paris and had been a monk at Cluny. He and his family were strong supporters of Pope Callistus II (Guy of Burgundy, 1119-1124) and great opponents of the Frangipani.
