Welcome to Summer Bridge

David and Janet would like to welcome you to our home page. This was put together to make the workshops run smoother and give you a place you can always return to when you use the open labs. You will find a collection of links to web sites both here on campus and around the world. These links should serve to get you started on any projects you might have connected with computer technology. If you don't find the help you need here, we ask that you use the links at the bottom of this page to send us your questions so we can provide more help in the future.

Knowing where things are, virtually on campus, can be just as important as knowing where to go IRL (In Real Life). We all have one of those, right?

Email

Your Unix account is your Internet account. It is referred to in a variety of ways: your email, your student account, your Unix account. You can use Pine email, set up a web page, store graphics images, telnet to the internet, use the library system, and ftp. Consider your Unix account as your work space on the University system. It is an environment which has many tools. We will cover as many of the tools and environments as possible in our short time together.

Setting up CSUN Unix accounts:

Electronic mail is one of the main communication environments of the Internet. Pine and Netscape (Eudora, Eudora-lite and other "pop" servers) are two different "flavors" of email. They look different, but are very similar. Your Unix account comes with Pine email, so we will start with Pine, using Pine "tools." If you learn to use Pine well, you should have fewer problems learning Netscape mail later. Top of the page

Logging in Procedures for Pine

The following login example demonstrates the login
               process:

               HP-UX huey A.09.01 A 9000/755 (ttys2)

login: hectr01a When prompted for login, type
                                    your user ID -- using
                                    lowercase characters, then
                                    lightly tap the [Enter] (or
                                    [Return] key.

Password: passwrd When prompted for password,
                                    type your password -- using
                                    lowercase characters, then
                                    lightly tap the [Enter] (or
                                    [Return]) key. What you type
                                    will NOT be displayed.

------------- --------------------------------------------------
Note: It is important that you type your user ID and
password using lowercase characters only. UNIX is
case sensitive and will not recognize uppercase
               user ID and password entries.
------------- --------------------------------------------------

Entering
Email After you have successfully completed the logon
process the UNIX system prompt will appear, such
as "huey >" or "louie >".

You are now ready to access electronic mail
(email). At the UNIX prompt, using lowercase
               characters only, type:

               email

and tap the [Enter] (or [Return]) key once.

------------- --------------------------------------------------
WARNING: Be sure to type "email" and NOT just "mail". If
you type "mail" you will access the UNIX default
               mail system rather than Pine.

If you do make this mistake and you have no
current messages the message "No mail" will appear
and you will be returned to the UNIX prompt. If
you have any messages, the last message will
scroll by on the screen and there will be a ?
prompt at the bottom of the screen. Type quit at
the ? prompt to return to the UNIX system prompt.

Word Perfect

Most of you have writing assignments from your instructors, so we will go through the features of Word Perfect. Please try out the WP tutorial coach. We will practice cutting and pasting from WP to email, from email to WP. Some of you have already started by highlighting the text on a web page and copying that text into a WP document, then editing the text. You can do this with any text that appears on your screen. Just highlight the text with the mouse. Go to the Edit menu and select copy. Open the window for the application you would like to paste your text into, then click on the Edit menu again, selecting paste this time. Voila. The text will dump into WP document or your email. You may then edit from there. hint If you edit all text in WP, you will have all the editing features at your disposal. This goes for email as well. Polish your document in WP, then cut and paste into email.

You will also learn how to save your text to a floppy disk. This is extremely important since most open labs will not allow you to save to the hard drive. You must bring a floppy disk with you to the workshops. We recommend you have back up floppy disks of all your work as files sometimes get lost, floppy disks can be demagnetized or damaged in other ways. If the document is important, back it up. Also, be sure you protect your floppies by carrying them in a hard plastic container. This keeps them free of dust and protects the disk mechanisms.

If you buy an unformatted disk, you will have to format your floppy before you can save your work to disk. You do this by exiting windows.

At the dos prompt type:
format a:
Then hit the return.
You will be asked to insert your floppy and press "enter" to continue.
The computer will format your disk, reporting progress in percentages. When formatting is complete, the program will ask for a volume label. Simply hit the enter key. You will be asked if you have another disk to format. press "n" for no if you are done. Then remove your formated disk and return to windows by typing "win" at the dos prompt.

We will go through the save procedure for WP in the workshop.

Internet

The World Wide Web can be an invaluable source. You can access Oviatt Library from home and the labs, requesting research materials from the CSU system if we don't have them housed in Oviatt, locating exactly what materials are available BEFORE they step foot in the library. You can access global resources; you can access the web pages of your dept, your teacher, your friends, and all the help resources here on campus and around the world. Nuff said for now.

Your mission here is to locateYaHOO, arguably the BEST search engine on the net. (HINT) Click on the Netscape menu button for Directory ,then click on Internet search. Find Yahoo! Now type in something cool to search for...
