Typically, gene expression is induced at higher temperatures as the RNA denatures and reveals the ribosome binding site for a downstream gene. We developed Robo-Therm, a pipeline that combines an adaptive and user-friendly in silico motif search with a well-established reporter system to identify and characterize RNA thermometers.\r\n\r\n\u200b\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nWe have successfully implemented Robo-Therm to discover and characterize eight novel RNA thermometers (see research blog for me). All of these annotated RNA thermometers have been found in bacteria genomes, and two of them also occur in phage genomes which infect the bacterial host that also contains the same thermometer.\r\n\r\n\u200b\r\nOngoing research is focused on discovering more RNA thermometers, identifying new thermoregulatory RNA elements, and engineering synthetic RNA thermometers. The lab develops and uses methods in computational biophysics and structural bioinformatics to understand the biochemistry of GPCR signaling and to use structural modeling for rationally developing therapeutics. Dr. Abrol was the recipient of the NIH Build-Poder Faculty Mentor of the Year award in 2018.\r\n\r\nA major focus in the lab is on G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that comprise the largest superfamily of integral membrane proteins that help a cell to convert extracellular signals into multiple intracellular signaling cascades. This critical role of GPCRs makes them therapeutic targets for ~40% of all modern drugs. Multiple signaling effects of GPCRs targeted by drugs can cause on-target side-effects, so a molecular understanding of GPCR function is essential for rational drug discovery to minimize those side-effects. I have worked continuously at CSUN since 1993 across two colleges (Health and Human Development; Family and Consumer Sciences) and four departments (Educational Psychology and Counseling (2011-present), Child and Adolescent Development (2004-2011), Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences (1993-2005), and Family and Consumer Sciences (1996). In addition to teaching, I have extensive experience in leadership positions with non-profit organizations serving young children with disabilities and their families (1993-2011). My research interests and publications focus on early identification of developmental delays in young children in low-income underserved communities in collaboration with the Family Focus Resource Center. His first book, The Great Exhibition of 1851 (Yale University Press, 1999), which was praised by The American Historical Review as \u201can exemplary piece of cultural history,\u201d unravels the many and varied meanings of the Crystal Palace, the site of the first world\u2019s fair and one of the pre-eminent cultural icons of the nineteenth century. Since then, he has focused his research and writing on the British Empire. He has authored several articles on art and empire, including the historiographical essay on that topic in The Oxford History of the British Empire. His most recent book, Imperial Boredom: Monotony and the British Empire (Oxford University Press, 2018), challenges the long-established view that that the British Empire was about adventure and excitement, with heroic men and intrepid women settling new lands and spreading commerce and civilization around the globe, demonstrating instead that boredom was central to the nineteenth-century imperial experience. Professor Auerbach has held fellowships at the Yale Center for British Art, the Huntington Library, the National Maritime Museum (London), and the Hakluyt Society, and is also the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2019 he received CSUN's Preeminent Scholarly Publication Award. She is the College of Health and Human Development (CHHD) Dean's Fellow for Racial Equity. She has served as Special Assistant to the Dean and as Equity Faculty Affiliate for CSUN's Office of the Provost and the Office of Student Success. Dr. Augustin's research interests include cultural humility, racial equity, and workplace readiness. She has facilitated cultural competence, cultural humility, racial equity seminars and workplace readiness trainings for a variety of groups such as the University of Findlay Ohio, School of Pharmacy, Diversity Grand Rounds; and for ZOE International. In addition, Dr. Augustin has 8 years of governance experience, having served as Governing Board Director and Program Board Chair for Meet Each Need with Dignity (MEND Poverty), a nonprofit that serves families and individuals who experience low income by meeting their most immediate basic needs and helping them build resources and skills to address and overcome long-term poverty. She serves Tarzana Treatment Centers as an Advisory Board Subcommittee Member for Culturally Relevant Practices.
