October 31, 2016

Northridge- The Veterans Resource Center (VRC) at the University Student Union (USU) invites all students, faculty and staff to a celebration of CSUN students who have served in the U.S. armed services during “We (Heart) Our Veterans Week”.  The annual event will run from Sunday, Nov.6 through Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11.  All in the CSUN community are welcome to participate in this week full of fun activities and recognition for the more than 690 student veterans currently on campus.

“The student veterans at CSUN bring a special strength, pride, experience and courage to our campus every day. This event is an opportunity to show them the appreciation of the entire campus,” said VRC Coordinator Patrina Croisdale. “We (Heart) Our Veterans Week not only celebrates students veterans, but it also provides entertaining and informational activities  for the entire campus community.”

To start off the week on Sunday, all are encouraged to take part in the “5K Fun Run” in collaboration with Sigma Tau Alpha. Whether you are running or just showing support to participants, this 5k run will be great for fun and fitness. Following the 5k, everyone will head over to the Oviatt lawn to participate in the placement of a powerful display featuring a U.S. Flag Garden with a flag honoring every veteran on campus.

On Monday, Nov. 7, you can learn more about the veteran experience by attending the “Joining Forces” Veteran Ally Workshop at 2:30 p.m. in the Altadena Room at the USU. If you can’t make this workshop, the VRC will be providing another one on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m. in the Thousand Oaks Room.

On Tuesday, Nov. 8, the Veterans Resource Center will open its doors to all of the CSUN community at the “VRC Open House” from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Attendees can network while enjoying a root beer float and learning about the many great programs the VRC has to offer.

Then get ready for a good time on Thursday, Nov. 10 at the “CSUN Students and Veterans Party on the Plaza” on the Plaza del Sol at the USU from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Everyone will enjoy free food, fun, music and giveaways, as well as getting a close up look at an original Humvee.

The CSUN campus will be closed on Veterans Day Friday, Nov. 11, but you can still continue the week of celebration by joining with the VRC crew to participate in “America’s Parade: Los Angeles” at the Veterans Affair Hospital Campus in West Los Angeles. This parade will feature veterans, active duty military personnel, high school and college bands and CSUN supporters of our veteran community. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to contact the VRC at (818) 677–4672 for more information.
