Honoring VNR’s Advisory Board Chair We are most pleased to join in honoring our VNR Advisory Board chair, former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joy Picus, one of two women featured in the Museum of the San Fernando Valley’s “Powerhouse Women of the San Fernando Valley” exhibition. This exhibition is in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, establishing women’s right to vote. Joy reminds us that the many women who fought to win that right were “suffragists” not “suffragettes’! The exhibition is on through October 31, and information about it is at The Museum of the San Fernando Valley.
Navigating Managerialism: Experiences of Middle Managers in Social Justice Nonprofits
Mentorships for African American Male Social Workers in Valley Nonprofits
Two lectures with discussion following will be given at an upcoming meeting of the Valley Providers Collaborative. CSUN Professor Lauren Willner will discuss the concept of “managerialism” and her study of how middle managers in nonprofit social justice agencies deal with their managerial responsibilities. And CSUN Professor Allen Lipscomb will discuss his study of how mentoring can benefit African American Male Social Workers in Valley nonprofits. This free event will take place at a meeting of the Valley Providers Collaborative on Thursday, October 17, 2019 from 1-3pm at The Zev Yaroslavsky Family Support Center in Van Nuys. Health and Human Service Nonprofit Executive Directors Roundtable brings together health and human service nonprofit CEOs and senior staff in the San Fernando Valley for informal discussion of important topics and peer-to-peer networking, as well as guest speakers. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 12th from 4-6 pm. In addition to networking and informal problem-solving discussion, a section of this meeting will include a discussion about the future of the Roundtable - do we want to continue these meetings? Quarterly or on some other schedule? What format works best? The Roundtable is coordinated by VNR, Valley Care Community Consortium and The Children's Burn Foundation, which will host the meeting in its conference room and provide refreshments. Building Future Leadership of Family Foundations As wealth continues to transfer from one generation to another, younger generations need to become more actively involved in their family’s foundation Shirley Welk Fredricks and her family’s Lawrence Welk Family Foundation have been pioneers in structuring and growing multigenerational leadership - including grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jan Kern and her Family Foundation Information Exchange groups, based at Southern California Grantmakers, has been a pioneer in bringing together family foundations leaders to share with and help each other with the challenges of leadership and operations. This free workshop, offered to San Fernando Valley family foundations, will feature these two leaders in conversation with Dr. Thomas Backer, who has studied philanthropy (including a year-long study of FFIX commission by the Annie E. Casey Foundation) for more than 30 years. The workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 19th from 4-6pm at Strength United in Van Nuys. Sharing Leadership - Strategies for Nonprofit EDs and Boards On July 15, VNR facilitated a workshop exploring how EDs (and other senior staff) and Boards can share leadership responsibilities. Speakers Paul Hahn and David Riherd (for 25 years co-EDs of Wildlife Learning Center); Abraham Tetenbaum and Donna Wood-Babcock (Founder/Board Chair and ED respectively of Enrichment Works; and Eileen Barnett (long-time member of the five-person leadership group running the Musical Theatre Guild) discussed three models for sharing leadership and had an open discussion with participants about their own experiences. Executive Service Corps’ 2020 Executive Directors Leadership Institute The 2020 Wells Fargo Executive Directors Leadership Institute (EDLI) is a 12-month leadership coaching program designed to help both new and experienced Executive Directors transform their leadership, strengthen their network and guide their organizations toward long-term sustainability. This program provides dedicated one-on-one coaching, peer learning and comprehensive training, which helps nonprofit leaders turn their visions into reality. It is the only program designed exclusively for nonprofit Executive Directors in our region that combines long-term coaching and training. Crowdfunding for Nonprofits is valuable tool for fundraising for charitable nonprofits, but there is much to consider before beginning a crowdfunding effort. The IDEAL Conference Small business owners and nonprofit professionals face similar challenges of increasing visibility and maximizing productivity with limited resources and personnel.
